    Bathroom tub to shower conversion

    Services We Offer

Converting your bathtub to a shower can make your bathroom more functional, safe, and hygienic for you and your family. It can improve the design of your space and make a small bathroom feel more spacious. Customize your bathroom to fit your lifestyle with a walk-in shower.

The top reasons homeowners choose to convert a bathtub to a shower:

    • Don’t like the way the current tub looks
    • Want to change the layout and functionality of the bathroom
    • Would prefer a shower to the current tub
    • Improve shower safety with low or no threshold entry and the ability to install non-slip tiles
    • Ability to install built-in seating and grab bars
    • Increase the value and curb appeal of your home
    • It’s difficult and risky to climb into a traditional bathtub – a better choice for the elderly and those with limited mobility. They can easily roll a wheelchair into a curbless shower.

    Costs

How much does it cost tub to shower conversion?

The average total cost to remodel a bathtub into a shower is about $8,000 including materials and labor. Your project may cost more or less. Contact us for a customized estimate based on your specific needs.

    Factors Affecting Cost

    • Replacing Piping: Piping may need to be replaced or rerouted to create the shower you want. These costs may vary depending on your specific bathroom and plumbing needs. You may also have the opportunity to upgrade your plumbing during a remodel.
    • Mold, Mildew, Fungus or Rot Remediation. Older homes may have problems with mold, mildew or rot, especially in damp areas. If you discover any of these during the demolition process, you’ll need to remediate the problem before installation.
    • Complexity of the project.
    • Wall Covering Materials
    • Which flooring solution you choose
    • The number and size of built-in niches
    • Whether there is integrated LED lighting
    • Integrated seating and safety rails
    •  The style of your enclosure and shower door
    • Electric towel rail
    • Choice of shower system
    • Underfloor heating

    Scope of work

Let’s say you need a major small bathroom remodel of about 40sf for 3 pieces with a bathtub conversion to a curbless shower.

We will assume that the location of the plumbing fixtures will remain the same, i.e. drainage or water movement will not be considered.

The bathroom will consist of a glass curbless shower with a sliding door, a toilet, and a sink.

Scope of work for a major bathroom remodel to convert a bathtub to a curbless shower:

    • Property protection: flooring/stairs/furniture/etc.
    • Demolition and removal of construction debris
    • Replace all plumbing fixtures (including bathtub to shower enclosure, shower enclosure kit, toilet, showerhead, sink and faucet)
    • Waterproof the floor and walls around the tub or shower.
    • Install new tile on the floor
    • Install new shower walls and tile around the shower.
    • Grout the tile joints
    • Refinish a vanity
    • Replace or install a cosmetic light fixture
    • Supplying and installing new bathroom accessories (including a bar, mirror, toilet paper holder, and robe hook)
    • Prepare drywall for painting
    • Applying a fresh coat of paint to the walls and ceiling
    • Clean bathroom before handover

Once we have the scenario and scope of work, let’s discuss the cost.

What our Clients say about us

    All about our work

Tips for converting a tub to a shower:

    1. According to building codes, the floor area of a shower stall should be at least 30 inches by 30 inches.
    2. If you’re building to NKBA standards, the shower space should be at least 36 inches by 36 inches and the finished ceiling height should be at least 80 inches.
    3. Distance from edge of toilet bowl to shower wall: 15 inches minimum, 18 inches recommended.
    4. Distance from the front of the toilet bowl to the shower wall (or any wall): 21 inches minimum, 30 inches recommended.
    5. The swinging shower door must be able to open without obstruction. If there is not enough space, sliding glass shower doors can help solve swing door problems.
    6. Do not install the shower near a window. Water can seep through the window frame into your walls. This can lead to the growth of mold and mildew.

    Expert advice

    The shower floor

The floor of the shower determines how the transition from tub to shower will look and how much it will cost. They come in two types: with a step (curb) and without a step (curbless). Let’s compare the pros and cons of a curbless shower with a tile floor and a shower with an acrylic base (tray or pan):

    Curbless Shower with Tile Floor

    Pros:

    • Aesthetic Appeal: Curbless showers with tile floors often have a sleek and modern appearance, contributing to a contemporary and open bathroom design.
    • Accessibility: The absence of a curb makes it more accessible, especially for individuals with mobility issues or those who use mobility aids like wheelchairs or walkers.
    • Customization: Tiles come in a wide range of materials, colors, and patterns, allowing for a high level of customization to match the overall bathroom design.
    • Low Maintenance: Tile floors are relatively easy to clean, and any individual damaged tile can be replaced without affecting the entire shower structure.
    • Drainage: The absence of a curb facilitates better water drainage and can contribute to a more efficient and functional shower space.

    Cons:

    • Installation Complexity: Installing a curbless shower with a tile floor can be more complex and may require skilled professionals to ensure proper waterproofing and drainage.
    • Cost: The initial cost of materials and labor for a curbless shower with a tile floor can be higher compared to some other shower options.
    • Slippery Surface: Some tile materials can be slippery when wet, which may pose a safety concern. Choosing slip-resistant tiles can mitigate this issue.

Shower with Acrylic Base (Tray or Pan)

    Pros:

    • Easy Installation: Acrylic shower bases are typically easier and quicker to install compared to a tile floor, making them a cost-effective and efficient option.
    • Cost-Effective: Acrylic bases are generally more budget-friendly, making them a popular choice for those looking for a cost-effective shower solution.
    • Low Maintenance: Acrylic surfaces are easy to clean and maintain. They are resistant to mold and mildew, making them a hygienic choice.
    • Non-Slip Options: Many acrylic bases come with built-in textures or non-slip surfaces, enhancing safety in the shower.
    • Variety of Styles: Acrylic bases come in various shapes and sizes, providing flexibility in design and allowing for easier integration into different bathroom layouts.

    Cons:

    • Limited Aesthetic Options: While acrylic bases are available in various styles, they may not offer the same level of customization as tile floors in terms of appearance and texture.
    • Durability Concerns: Acrylic surfaces may be more prone to scratches and damage compared to the durability of tile.
    • Limited Lifespan: Over time, acrylic can wear and show signs of aging, potentially requiring replacement sooner than a well-maintained tile floor.

Ultimately, the choice between a curbless shower with a tile floor and a shower with an acrylic base depends on individual preferences, budget considerations, and specific needs for accessibility and aesthetics.
